Solution to the riddle / Solución a la adivinanza

Well, a bit more advanced, here comes the beast. It's an Ungepanzerter Mannschaftstransportwagen Sd.Kfz. 251, one of the rare, unarmoured initial production 251s. I was inspired by one of the pics in the "AFV Photo Album" published by Canfora, which shows one just destroyed in Czechoslovakia in 1945. The original kit is the poor Sd.Kfz. 251 B from Zvezda, which for example has the lower front far too wide, around 6mm in total, and an interior closer to a C than B version (sadly I found these mistakes too late). But that's the only game in town if you want a B, A or MTW like this one. Hope to get the interior and rest of the details ready this week and start painting.

Little Adler returns from war: Painting

This is the 1/35 Adler from Bronco after the trip to the Belgian Scale Modellers Convention. Days before I saw it wasn't going to be ready for the show, so instead I continued working on it at the Spanish Team table: a fantastic and long weekend working and laughing with the old friends, some shopping, surprises and everything an expedition of this type carries along. The hairspray technique has been very useful to imitate those airbrushed schemes where paint was so poorly diluted that simply some rain started to chip and wear it off.

Little Adler returns from war

Just a brief note to show the little 1/35 Adler Kfz. 13 from Bronco I'm working on. Pics of the build are from last week and this weekend is getting the base coat. It's based in a curious modification at the end of the war, with higher and closed roof, that appears in an issue of the superb Panzerwrecks series.

Pz.Kpfw. 35(t): Love & Rivets!

............................................
At last the little grey dinosaur is finished. I have enjoyed a lot that project, from head to toes, it's even sad to be at the end of this Pz.Kpfw. 35(t) from CMK. Ok, well, looking at the rest of models waiting paint, is not so sad. Have to glue the antenna and maybe I'll add a tow rope I was preparing, but now it's ready to roll across the french fields in 1940...
............................................
Trying to put some order in my workshop, I found that CMK kit purchased just as soon as it appeared years ago and stored under piles of other models. Thought it was time to make some justice to it, and armed with books and pictures, went to work on that beautiful beast. Surprisingly, the kit has some very nice detail in places, a good fit overall and no flash, just the moulds had their limitations and dozens of rivets are nearly non-existant. I had a good stock of old Lee/Grant Tamiya hulls as donors for the rivets, so I just needed some quiet evenings to put them right. The only extra purchase were the (superb) Tasca early jerrycans, the rest is Evergreen, sprue, and some leftovers from other kits. Lionmarc has a lovely new gun for the 35(t), the kit one is poor, but had just glued the original and opted to detail it a bit and put covers on both gun and MG.

A look on the Stuart OP

............................................
While starting my contribution to the Panzergruppe Sherman, and as the Royal Artillery can't be left behind, I'm also working on and off on this 1/35 Academy M3A1 Stuart III OP.

............................................
The Academy kit has good moulding, but detail is not at all correct. I had to reposition rivets, wheels in the old Tamiya kit are far better and suspect there are some size issues, but have prefered to skip getting involved too much in that. To make the OP version we need new smoke dischargers, three antennas, new or repositioned stowage boxes, sandshields, telephone reels and some other bits. The paint scheme will be in typical mediterranean pattern, but have not decided still colours nor unit.

A striped Opel for the landing strip

Some simple pics of the finished Opel TLF. Painting has been an enjoyable experience, quicker than expected, and a great satisfaction to get it finished after the sad start-and-stop it suffered years back. Just some pieces from the chasis and cab of Italeri Opel Blitz were used. My dear hungarian friends at Mosonmagyaróvár, this model is specially dedicated to all of you!

.................................

Come on Opel, light my fire!

......................................................................
I don't know how many models do you have sleeping at your home, completely built-up but unpainted, waiting their turn. Surely too much, more than desirable. In my case, easily a couple of dozens, something I'm not proud of. But sometimes it happens that a project turns wrong, or you finish a bit tired of correcting a crappy model, or a scratch takes longer than expected to finish and you loose interest. The solution is to stop what you have on hand, open the cupboard and start another one.

......................................................................
I began this 1/35 Luftwaffe Opel Blitz (2.5 ton 1934 model) fire engine some 8-9 years back. It's a nearly full scratch that I made with a lot of illusion and in a brief and intense period of time, using just some pieces form the Italeri Opel Blitz. It was finally painted, nearly finished, but suffered a terrible accident: an open bottle of solvent dropped over it. Don't ask how and why, I still can't explain it, but you can imagine the sad result. I didn't have nor forces nor illusion. I cleaned and recovered what I could, put all in a box and goodbye. Till some weeks ago ;)

......................................................................
Putting some order in my workshop, the Opel showed up and thought why not try it again. So I removed what paint remained, repaired the damage and remade some lost parts. I have primed with Vallejo, that helped to spot some cracks and defects on the surface, and once corrected, it has now the Tamiya colours waiting all the brush work on them. The Opel runs again and the best part starts now.

Humber "Toffee Box"

............................

Started a long time ago as was posted HERE, and getting now the final push after some months maturing in the dark, like a good wine. Just from the start I wanted to have it painted in the curious Maltese "crazy paving" scheme, something I wished to try. But rummaging through the impressive and magnificent picture collection from Life magazine made available online by Google, I discovered an 8th Army Ford WOA1 in a rare and surprising tricolour scheme that caught me inmediately and changed my plans: I had to paint it that way. Now comes the fun: washes, filters, chipping, dirt, some life put into...

M8... Greyhound?... Windhund?

M8... Greyhound or Windhund? That would be a question for its new owners...
Except for the antennas, some stowage and possibly a bug or two to retouch, that 1/35 M8 Greyhound from Tamiya it's finished. Sorry about the pictures quality, and all comments wellcome!

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . .

M8... Greyhound o Windhund?

Sd.Kfz. 221: "A (last) night in Tunisia"

"A (last) night in Tunisia" for this old warrior, at the end of the north-african campaign. The Bronco kit is a nice model but sadly along with some errors it retains the interior of the normal 221: the s.Pz.B. 41 version had a rearranged interior (ammo stowage, radio, etc) and as reliable info on this is scarce or non-existant, I had to base my work on the 222/223 series and some educated guesswork. I'm very happy with the result and has changed the perception I had of the 221 as the "ugly duck" of the family: definitely it is nicer than the Sd.Kfz. 222 / Sd.Kfz. 223 series.

Painting is a Tamiya mix for the sand base colour, and all the follow-up work was made by brush (and a bit of sponge) with a combination of Tamiya enamels, Vallejo acrylics, pin washes, MiG filters and some pastels and pigments on the underside. Stay tuned for the complete printed article!

.........................

I began painting this 1/35 Tamiya M20 more than a year ago, at the World Expo in Gerona (man, what an incredible time there ) and finally have finished it these days. The reason for such a long period to finish the model is simple: I've using the M20 all this time as a test bed for tecniques I wanted to try or adopt.
..............................................

Here I used for the first time Vallejo in place of Humbrol for chipping, bruishes, etc. I even tried to apply washes with this medium, not the best result but it didn't went that bad. I used for the first time Tamiya enamels (superb) replacing my long-loved Humbrol for filters, washes, rust, etc. And I've trying to apply dust with enamels in the way my friends Jorge López and Joaquin García Gazquez have been doing for a while (I went for just a bit of dust, but I like the way it works). Also, I haven't made any shadows nor highlights (just a bit of "outlining"): the idea was to start with the Tamiya base colour and then work directly over with filters, pin washes, chipping, dirt, etc. There is no modulation nor pigments. I'm quite happy with the results, some areas could be better and there are some details to retouch (the too shiny cal .50, etc), but as a test bed for future projects has been very helpful.
..............................................
