Girls, Panzers and Type 89

................................................................................
Nearly two years ago, and together with the japanese magazine Armour Modelling, Fine Molds brought a delicious 1/35 kit of the Type 89 japanese tank. The typical ugly and ungainly tank you fall in love for. That was supposedly an exclusive (and expensive) edition, impossible to get by other means. But maybe moulding costs wouldn't justify a single special edition (even with the three wonderful magazines included). Better a bit of patience, and we would see ;)

Y no pasa nada...
................................................................................
And certainly, here we have a far more affordable Type 89, and even with an extra, as it includes a photo-etched exhaust grille. The curious thing is we have another special edition, now related to the famous "anime" Girls und Panzer series, with its markings and an eye-catching pink box. It doesn't matter…

................................................................................
The case is I was compiling information through my books and folders, when I found three single pages I had pull out from old japanese magazines many years back, I suspect Panzer or The Tank Magazine. Through some nice drawings, the details and differences between the petrol-engined Type 89A and the diesel-engined Type 89B (in its two sub-variants) could be seen. The two diesel sub-variants match both Fine Molds kits, the final production Otsu from the first edition, and the late production Kou of the second one. The drawings are simply superb, similar to the ones seen in the popular Achtung Panzer or Panzers in Saumur books, but closer in style to the unforgetable sketches from Yoshiyuki Takani in that jewel of a book Tamiya devoted to the Churchill (amongst a lot of impressive box-art for many japanese companies). I imagine getting the original magazine is nearly impossible, and thinking about the drawings quality and interest, I have scanned them for the blog, but if someone knows any copyright issues I'll have no problem in removing them. Hope they can help!

Some work for the KitMeet 1.2

................................................................................
Along with a couple of models in basecoat that I'll bring to the KitMeet 1.2 to give them a full weathering treatment, I wanted to carry something to build, so work started on this 1/35th Tamiya StuG III G. As the Tamiya kit is not exactly the early version they say, I decided to go full forward and make a final version from it (even if I have also the final G from Dragon). There are still some corrections and a lot of detailing to do, but the beast it's on the way.

V-150 Commando, back on the track

Lots of work along the last weeks and very few spare time for plastics. Some projects stopped, or advancing very slowly. So I wanted to get rid of all that with a simple kit, just some very basic detailing, and getting quickly into the paint. I had the 1/35 M706 Product Improved fom Hobby Boss screaming to get into the workshop since it appeared, and as it includes the pieces for making a later V-150 Commando... some evenings afterwards, here it is...

GAZ-MM Polutorka, somewhere in the East

That's the "old" 1/35 Toko-Eastern Express kit of the GAZ-MM, updated with Miniart wheels, new cargo body and some other home-cooked details. Oh shame, it had its green basecoat since last september and did nothing more till a couple of weeks back, when I was fortunate to get some hard-earned spare days and decided to put hairspray, brush and fun to get it ready for the Mosonmagyaróvár Show. All the paintwork is simply made with Tamiya (acrylic and enamel), Vallejo and Humbrol, plus the hairspray technique.

Solution to the riddle / Solución a la adivinanza

Well, a bit more advanced, here comes the beast. It's an Ungepanzerter Mannschaftstransportwagen Sd.Kfz. 251, one of the rare, unarmoured initial production 251s. I was inspired by one of the pics in the "AFV Photo Album" published by Canfora, which shows one just destroyed in Czechoslovakia in 1945. The original kit is the poor Sd.Kfz. 251 B from Zvezda, which for example has the lower front far too wide, around 6mm in total, and an interior closer to a C than B version (sadly I found these mistakes too late). But that's the only game in town if you want a B, A or MTW like this one. Hope to get the interior and rest of the details ready this week and start painting.

Little Adler returns from war: Painting

This is the 1/35 Adler from Bronco after the trip to the Belgian Scale Modellers Convention. Days before I saw it wasn't going to be ready for the show, so instead I continued working on it at the Spanish Team table: a fantastic and long weekend working and laughing with the old friends, some shopping, surprises and everything an expedition of this type carries along. The hairspray technique has been very useful to imitate those airbrushed schemes where paint was so poorly diluted that simply some rain started to chip and wear it off.

Limes Model : Wow, wow, wowww!

Little Adler returns from war

Just a brief note to show the little 1/35 Adler Kfz. 13 from Bronco I'm working on. Pics of the build are from last week and this weekend is getting the base coat. It's based in a curious modification at the end of the war, with higher and closed roof, that appears in an issue of the superb Panzerwrecks series.

Pz.Kpfw. 35(t): Love & Rivets!

............................................
At last the little grey dinosaur is finished. I have enjoyed a lot that project, from head to toes, it's even sad to be at the end of this Pz.Kpfw. 35(t) from CMK. Ok, well, looking at the rest of models waiting paint, is not so sad. Have to glue the antenna and maybe I'll add a tow rope I was preparing, but now it's ready to roll across the french fields in 1940...
............................................
Trying to put some order in my workshop, I found that CMK kit purchased just as soon as it appeared years ago and stored under piles of other models. Thought it was time to make some justice to it, and armed with books and pictures, went to work on that beautiful beast. Surprisingly, the kit has some very nice detail in places, a good fit overall and no flash, just the moulds had their limitations and dozens of rivets are nearly non-existant. I had a good stock of old Lee/Grant Tamiya hulls as donors for the rivets, so I just needed some quiet evenings to put them right. The only extra purchase were the (superb) Tasca early jerrycans, the rest is Evergreen, sprue, and some leftovers from other kits. Lionmarc has a lovely new gun for the 35(t), the kit one is poor, but had just glued the original and opted to detail it a bit and put covers on both gun and MG.

A look on the Stuart OP

............................................
While starting my contribution to the Panzergruppe Sherman, and as the Royal Artillery can't be left behind, I'm also working on and off on this 1/35 Academy M3A1 Stuart III OP.

............................................
The Academy kit has good moulding, but detail is not at all correct. I had to reposition rivets, wheels in the old Tamiya kit are far better and suspect there are some size issues, but have prefered to skip getting involved too much in that. To make the OP version we need new smoke dischargers, three antennas, new or repositioned stowage boxes, sandshields, telephone reels and some other bits. The paint scheme will be in typical mediterranean pattern, but have not decided still colours nor unit.
